Chesterfield first-team coach Kieron Dyer sat down with the media on Friday morning to preview the away fixture against Barnet on Saturday afternoon.
Starting with Saturday’s opponents, Dyer said: “We had great battles with them in the National League. They’re a team that are really fearless. They’re one of the most exciting teams in the league.
“They get real numbers in the box; they’re very brave. Most teams, when they’re attacking, will leave a 2v1 against Will Grigg at the back or Lee Bonis or a Freddie Ladapo.
“Barnet are really brave, and they go man for man at the back and try and attack with so many numbers. That’s why most of their games are really exciting. So, we expect a really hard game. We have to be at our best defensively as well.”
Continuing on how Barnet have adapted from the National League to League Two, Dyer added: “We know the manager (Dean Brennan) really well. Him and the gaffer speak regularly on the phone. They’ve got good players.
“They play a really attacking style. They’re very adaptable. They’re very hard to plan for because they change formations so well. Obviously, we won the league with 98 points, and they got nearly 90 points as well. They’re a good, good team.”
Dyer also spoke about the Spireites’ unbeaten run. He explained: “We’re not content with the six unbeaten. We feel that we could have won all six. We’re creating loads of chances now. We have to be clinical, and we have to be really ruthless.
“As you can imagine, all week in training, it’s just been finishing and crossing. So, six unbeaten and really happy, but we want to be more demanding on our players, more demanding ourselves as coaches, so that we get great repetition in training to put the ball in the back of the net.”
Finally, reacting to the news of Tom Naylor’s contract extension, Dyer said: “He’s played at a lot higher level than League Two. Him, Janoi Donacien, Grigg, those types of characters, you need them because they’ve got the experience.
“We brought Tom in as a number six to get us promoted from the National League. Never in our wildest dreams did we think he’d score over ten goals in one season. Even this season, he comes up trumps all the time with important goals.”
