Assistant-manager Danny Webb spoke exclusively to 1866+ ahead of today’s game against Morecambe.
Reflecting on the Easter weekend, he said: “You can’t afford now to be negative and look back and go, ‘what if?’ If we’d come back and had one point out of the two, it would have been gutting. If we’d had zero points, it would have been even worse. But obviously the plan was to get six.
“With how the Bradford game went on Monday, I think we’d all be grateful for that point in the end.”
On the final two games of the season, he added: “I firmly believe if we were to win both games, we’ll sneak into the play-offs and if we don’t win against Morecambe, I think it’ll be a hell of a tough task to get in there.
“It’s probably a must-win game. I don’t like using that phrase but it probably is in terms of getting in the play-offs, but the overall view of our season has been pretty positive with room for improvement.
“We had a fairly shaky start against Bradford and they started excellently, so if we start poorly, regardless of Morecambe’s league position, and they start with a little bit of freedom and a carefree approach to the game, then we could get hurt and we could make it a very disappointing and frustrating afternoon.
“We’ve got to make sure we give our fans something to sing about and more importantly go home happy about.”
Danny then provided an injury update, saying: “Ollie Banks suffered an injury to his calf, sadly. Initially we were hoping it was just a very light strain, but I think it will be a tough ask for him to put on a shirt before the end of the season.
“The Morecambe game will probably be too soon for Jack Sparkes, but he should be available for selection against Accrington and even in training, Jack was showing glimpses of why we brought him to the club.”
Finally, he said: “We’ve worked so hard to get things back on track. I keep referring back to when we left Colchester, we all felt so flat and we wouldn’t have thought in a million years, as optimistic as I am, that we’re going to be in this position now.
“The lads have turned it around. Fair play, they’ve been brilliant, they’ve given the supporters something to hope about and hopefully we can fulfil that hope. But if we don’t turn up, then we can forget about it.”
